Nick Shannon, still struggling to get his life back together after
his sister's death, accepts a secondment to the Fraud Squad where
his financial acumen is meant to be put to good use. In reality
Nick finds the cases he's asked to investigate about as intellectually
stimulating as watching paint dry in a dark room with your eyes
shut.
On the point of collaring a small-time fraudster, Nick and his
colleagues are left flat-footed when the suspect avoids arrest by
jumping out of a seventeenth-storey window, so that it seems that
the crime wasn't so petty after all. In fact it looks as though
he was part of a major financial scam set up by an ex-police officer,
an erstwhile colleague of Nick's boss, Collins.
As he follows a paper trail of fraud Nick also discovers that the
man he needs to expose is the person who walked off with Collins'
wife. Wary of other people's personal agendas, but determined to
crack the case, Nick unravels a web of deceit and corruption to
a thrilling a cliff-hanging finale.
